Reported speech
B1 Mowa zależna 43 / 52
In short
Reported (indirect) speech (mowa zależna) retells what someone said without quotation marks, folding it into a subordinate clause: Powiedział, że jest zmęczony (“He said that he is/was tired”). The one thing to unlearn from English: Polish does not shift tenses backwards. The reported verb keeps the exact tense the speaker actually used - only the pronouns and time words change. Statements are linked with że, yes/no questions with czy, and commands become żeby + a past-tense verb form.
The rule
Direct speech (mowa niezależna) quotes the exact words: Powiedział: “Jestem zmęczony.” Indirect speech drops the quotation marks and attaches the words to a reporting verb (powiedzieć, mówić, napisać, odpowiedzieć, zapytać, poprosić) through a link word. Three things may change: the link word, the pronouns / time markers, and - in English but not in Polish - the tense.
No tense backshift (the key point)
In English and French, a past reporting verb pulls the reported tense back one step (is -> was, will -> would). Polish has no such rule. Whatever tense the person used out loud stays put, even after a past reporting verb. You report the original present with the present, the original past with the past, the original future with the future.
- “Jestem chory.” (present) -> Powiedział, że jest chory. (still present) = “He said he was ill.”
- “Byłem chory.” (past) -> Powiedział, że był chory. (still past) = “He said he had been ill.”
- “Będę chory.” (future) -> Powiedział, że będzie chory. (still future) = “He said he would be ill.”
Notice the English glosses backshift while the Polish does not. Translate the meaning, never the English tense.
że-clauses (statements)
A statement is reported with że (“that”), and there is always a comma before it. The reporting verb is one like powiedzieć, mówić, myśleć, twierdzić, wyjaśnić, oznajmić, napisać.
- “Wyjeżdżam.” -> Mówi, że wyjeżdża. (“She says (that) she is leaving.”)
- “To prawda.” -> Myśli, że to prawda. (“He thinks (that) it is true.”)
Reporting questions
Drop the question mark and keep normal statement word order (subject before verb, no inversion).
- Yes/no questions -> czy (“whether / if”): “Mówisz po polsku?” -> Pyta, czy mówię po polsku. (“He asks whether I speak Polish.”)
- wh-questions -> the same question word (kto, co, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego, jak, ile, który): “Gdzie mieszkasz?” -> Pyta, gdzie mieszkam. (“She asks where I live.”)
Reporting commands (żeby + past form)
An imperative becomes żeby + a verb in its past-tense (l-participle) form. The person is carried by a mobile ending fused onto the particle - żebym, żebyś, żeby, żebyśmy, żebyście, żeby - and the verb agrees in gender and number. Negative commands just add nie.
- “Zamknij okno!” -> Powiedział, żebym zamknął okno. (“He told me to close the window.”)
- “Nie palcie!” -> Lekarz powiedział, żebyśmy nie palili. (“The doctor told us not to smoke.”)
Pronoun and time adjustments
When you report later, shift the pronouns so they point at the right person, and adjust time / place words: ja -> on/ona, mój -> jego/jej, tu -> tam, dziś -> tego dnia, jutro -> następnego dnia.
Forms & patterns
Link word by speech type (comma always precedes the link word):
| Direct type | Marker in direct speech | Indirect link word |
|---|---|---|
| Statement | (none) | że |
| Yes/no question | intonation / czy | czy |
| wh-question | kto, co, gdzie, kiedy… | same word |
| Command (imperative) | imperative | żeby + past form |
Tense stays the same - contrast with English (past reporting verb powiedział):
| Direct utterance | Tense | Reported in Polish | English gloss |
|---|---|---|---|
| ”Pracuję.” | present | Powiedział, że pracuje. | He said he was working. |
| ”Pracowałem.” | past | Powiedział, że pracował. | He said he had worked. |
| ”Skończyłem.” | perfective past | Powiedział, że skończył. | He said he had finished. |
| ”Będę pracować.” | compound future | Powiedział, że będzie pracować. | He said he would work. |
| ”Przyjdę.” | perfective future | Powiedział, że przyjdzie. | He said he would come. |
The conjugated żeby particle (command / request), shown with przyjść “to come”:
| Person | Particle | Masculine | Feminine | Virile plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ja | żebym | żebym przyszedł | żebym przyszła | - |
| ty | żebyś | żebyś przyszedł | żebyś przyszła | - |
| on / ona / ono | żeby | żeby przyszedł | żeby przyszła | - |
| my | żebyśmy | - | - | żebyśmy przyszli |
| wy | żebyście | - | - | żebyście przyszli |
| oni / one | żeby | - | - | żeby przyszli / przyszły |
Time and place shifts in a later report:
| Direct | Indirect |
|---|---|
| dziś / dzisiaj | tego dnia |
| wczoraj | poprzedniego dnia / dzień wcześniej |
| jutro | następnego dnia / nazajutrz |
| teraz | wtedy / w tym momencie |
| tutaj | tam |
| w przyszłym tygodniu | w następnym tygodniu |
Examples
| Polski | English |

| Powiedzieli, że przyjdą następnego dnia. | They said they would come the next day. |
| Zapytał, czy mówię po polsku. | He asked whether I spoke Polish. |
| Nie wiem, kto to zrobił. | I don’t know who did it. |
| Zapytała, gdzie mieszkam. | She asked where I lived. |
| Lekarz powiedział, żebym nie palił. | The doctor told me not to smoke. |
| Poprosiła, żebyśmy byli cicho. | She asked us to be quiet. |
| Ciekawe, dlaczego się spóźnił. | I wonder why he was late. |
Common mistakes
- Powiedział, że był zmęczony (reporting “Jestem zmęczony”) -> Powiedział, że jest zmęczony - Polish has no backshift; keep the original present.
- Zapytał, że mówię po polsku -> Zapytał, czy mówię po polsku - yes/no questions use czy, not że.
- Powiedział że przyjdzie -> Powiedział, że przyjdzie - there is always a comma before że / czy / żeby.
- Lekarz powiedział, żebym nie palę -> Lekarz powiedział, żebym nie palił - the person sits on żebym; the verb takes its past (l-) form agreeing with the subject, not the present.
- Powiedział, żeby ja przyszedł -> Powiedział, żebym przyszedł - the person sits on the particle (żebym); don’t add a separate ja.
- Zapytała, gdzie mieszkasz ty / …gdzie mieszkasz? -> Zapytała, gdzie mieszkam - shift the pronoun and use statement order with no question mark.
Tips
- The golden rule: keep the tense the speaker actually used. If the English translation backshifts (is -> was), that is an English fact - the Polish verb does not move.
- Always put a comma before że, czy, and żeby - it is obligatory, unlike the optional English “that”.
- czy = “whether / if” for yes/no questions; wh-words (kto, co, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego…) stay unchanged, and the reported clause keeps plain statement order.
- Commands and requests use żeby + a past (l-) form: think żebym poszedł, żebyś zamknął, żebyśmy poczekali - the ending shows who, the participle shows gender and number.
- Remember the split of labour: że reports facts and statements; żeby reports commands, requests, and wishes (and this żeby is the same by particle you met in the conditional).
- Shift the human anchors too: ja -> on/ona, mój -> jego/jej, jutro -> następnego dnia, tu -> tam - a perfect tense with the wrong pronoun still tells the wrong story.
