In short
A diminutive turns a noun into something small, cute, affectionate, or a portion by adding -je. The exact ending (-je, -tje, -etje, -pje, -kje) depends on the final sound of the word. Every diminutive is a het-word and makes its plural with -s.
The rule
Pick the suffix by listening to the last sound, not just the spelling:
- -je - the default, after most consonants: boek -> boekje, kop -> kopje, kat -> katje, huis -> huisje.
- -tje - after a vowel, or after -l / -n / -r / -w preceded by a long vowel, diphthong or schwa: vrouw -> vrouwtje, ei -> eitje, stoel -> stoeltje, tafel -> tafeltje.
- -etje - after a short stressed vowel + l, m, n, ng, r; the consonant is doubled (never after ng): bal -> balletje, man -> mannetje, kom -> kommetje, ring -> ringetje.
- -pje - after m that follows a long vowel, diphthong or l/r: boom -> boompje, raam -> raampje, arm -> armpje.
- -kje - after unstressed -ing; the -ng becomes -nk: koning -> koninkje, woning -> woninkje.
Watch the spelling: a word ending in a single long-vowel letter doubles that vowel before -tje: auto -> autootje, foto -> fotootje, paraplu -> parapluutje.

Common mistakes
- de huisje -> het huisje - every diminutive is a het-word, no exceptions.
- balje / manje -> balletje / mannetje - short vowel + l/m/n/r takes -etje with a doubled consonant.
- boometje / kompje -> boompje / kommetje - long vowel + m -> -pje; short vowel + m -> -etje.
- autotje -> autootje - double the long vowel letter before -tje.
- huisjen / mannetjen -> huisjes / mannetjes - the diminutive plural is always -s, never -en.
- stoelje -> stoeltje - after a long vowel + l/n/r you need -tje, not bare -je.
Tips
- Two safe constants: a diminutive is always het and its plural is always -s. Learn those once and stop worrying.
- Trust your ears: kom has a short vowel (-> kommetje), boom has a long one (-> boompje).
- The m-rule trips everyone: short vowel = -etje, long vowel/diphthong/l/r = -pje.
- Diminutives soften and shrink: order a portion (een biertje, een kwartiertje, een bakje koffie) or sound friendly (een momentje, een vraagje). A few words almost only live as diminutives: meisje, ijsje, toetje.
