Adjective inflection
A1 Verbuiging van het bijvoeglijk naamwoord 16 / 48
In short
An adjective in front of a noun almost always takes an extra -e (de grote man, een grote man, grote mannen, het grote huis). The only exception is a singular het-word with een or no article, which keeps the bare form (een groot huis). After the verb (predicative) there is never an -e: het huis is groot.
The rule
When an adjective stands directly before a noun, you normally add -e:
- de-words, both with de and een: de grote man, een grote man
- all plurals: grote mannen, grote huizen
- het-words with het, dit/dat or a possessive: het grote huis, ons nieuwe kantoor
There is one exception: a het-word that is singular AND has een or no article -> no -e:
- een groot huis, groot huis, wat een mooi huis
When the adjective comes after the noun, as a predicate (with zijn, worden, blijven), it never gets -e: het huis is groot, de man is groot.
Forms & patterns
| Situation | Article + number | Add -e? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| de-word, definite | de + singular | yes | de grote man |
| de-word, indefinite | een + singular | yes | een grote man |
| plural (de- and het-words) | de + plural | yes | grote mannen / grote huizen |
| het-word, definite | het + singular | yes | het grote huis |
| demonstrative / possessive | deze / die / dit / dat / mijn / ons + singular | yes | dit lege gebouw |
| het-word, singular + indefinite | een / no article | NO | een groot huis |
| predicative (after the verb) | - | NO | het huis is groot |
Spelling when you add -e (the sound must stay the same):
| Change | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| long vowel | drop one vowel letter | groot -> grote, rood -> rode |
| short vowel | double the consonant | wit -> witte, dik -> dikke |
| f -> v | before the -e | lief -> lieve, doof -> dove |
| s -> z | before the -e | vies -> vieze, grijs -> grijze |
Adjectives that never change:
- material adjectives in -en: houten (wooden), gouden (golden), zilveren (silver), wollen (woollen) -> de houten tafel, een gouden ring
- a few in -a / -e (and most colour loanwords): prima, extra, roze (pink), oranje (orange), beige -> een roze jas, een oranje trui

Common mistakes
- een grote huis -> een groot huis - a singular het-word with een takes no -e.
- het huis is grote -> het huis is groot - predicative adjectives (after the verb) never take -e.
- de groot man -> de grote man - de-words always take -e before the noun.
- een houtene tafel -> een houten tafel - material adjectives in -en never inflect.
- een rozee jas -> een roze jas - words already ending in -e/-a stay unchanged.
Tips
- Remember just one “no -e” trigger before a noun: het-word + singular + indefinite (een/no article). Everything else before a noun gets -e.
- Quick test: with de, het, a plural, or a demonstrative or possessive (deze, die, dit, dat, mijn, ons), always add -e. Only een/geen/no article + a singular het-word drops the -e (een groot huis, but het/dit grote huis).
- Spelling hook: keep the vowel sound. Long vowel loses a letter (groot -> grote), short vowel doubles the consonant (wit -> witte), and f/s soften to v/z (lief -> lieve, vies -> vieze).
- After zijn, worden, blijven the adjective is bare: de soep is lekker, het wordt koud.
