Compound particles について, に対して, によって, にとって, として
B1 複合助詞「〜について・〜に対して・〜によって・〜にとって・〜として」 55 / 69
In short
A compound particle is a noun + particle frozen into a single connector: all five attach straight to a bare noun and then modify the verb, exactly like a case particle. について = about it, に対して = aimed at it, によって = by / because of / depending on it, にとって = judged from its standpoint, として = in the role of it. Each also has an adnominal shape for when it modifies a following noun (についての, に対する, による, にとっての, としての) - and that shape is where most learners lose marks.
The rule
Step 1 - The shared skeleton. Every item in this lesson is built the same way: Noun + に/と/を + a て-form or ます-stem (に for four of them, but と for として, which is と + する’s て-form して). That is why the attachment rule is so simple - the noun goes in bare, with no の, no な and no copula in front:
Noun + について + Verb / Noun + に対して + Predicate / Noun + によって + Predicate / Noun + にとって + evaluation / Noun + として + Predicate.
Because the て-form cannot sit in front of a noun, each one has a second, adnominal form. Learn the two shapes as a pair from the start: 日本について話します (Nihon ni tsuite hanashimasu, I talk about Japan) but 日本についての本 (Nihon ni tsuite no hon, a book about Japan).
Step 2 - 〜について / 〜に関して: the topic of talking, writing, thinking. These mark what a mental or verbal activity is about, so they want verbs like 話す, 書く, 調べる, 考える, 研究する, 説明する. に関して (ni kanshite) is the stiffer, more bureaucratic twin - same meaning, higher register.
Their adnominals are not parallel, and this is a classic trap. について takes a regular の: についての. に関して instead uses the plain form of the する-verb 関する: に関する (ni kansuru). 関して is that same verb’s て-form, so the noun-modifying shape is 関する and never ×関る or ×関しる: 環境に関する法律 (kankyō ni kansuru hōritsu, a law concerning the environment). に関しての also exists but sounds heavier; prefer に関する.
Step 3 - 〜に対して: the target something is aimed at. に対して (ni taishite) marks the receiving end of an attitude, action or reaction - the person or thing your strictness, gratitude, criticism, question or policy is directed at: 学生に対して厳しいです (Gakusei ni taishite kibishii desu, (he) is strict toward students). Adnominal: に対する (外国人に対する差別, gaikokujin ni taisuru sabetsu, discrimination against foreigners).
It has a second, unrelated job: contrast, “whereas”. Here it needs something in front of it to hang on, so a clause links with の: V/い-adj plain + のに対して, な-adj + なのに対して, Noun + であるのに対して/なのに対して. 兄は明るいのに対して、弟は静かです。 The two uses never blur in practice - one takes a bare noun, the other takes a clause.
Step 4 - 〜によって: one form, four readings. によって (ni yotte, written variant により ni yori, adnominal による ni yoru) is the busiest item in the lesson. Decide which reading you have by looking at the main clause:
- Agent of a formal passive - who did it, when the passive is written and the subject is a work, a law, a building: この小説は夏目漱石によって書かれました。 Ordinary personal passives keep plain に (先生に褒められました, lesson 45).
- Means / method - by what route: 話し合いによって問題を解決しました (hanashiai ni yotte mondai o kaiketsu shimashita, solved it by discussion).
- Cause - a formal 〜で: 事故によって電車が遅れました。
- “Varying depending on” - the reading that has no English particle at all. The main clause must contain a word of variation - 違う, 変わる, いろいろだ, 異なる: 人によって考え方が違います。 (Hito ni yotte kangaekata ga chigaimasu.)
Add は and you get 〜によっては (ni yotte wa), “in some cases”: 人によっては反対する人もいます (Hito ni yotte wa hantai suru hito mo imasu, some people are against it). This is a partial statement about some cases, not a general one, so it normally ends in 〜もいます/〜こともあります.
Step 5 - 〜にとって: the standpoint an evaluation is made from. にとって (ni totte) says “seen from X’s position”, and it is licensed by the predicate: it needs an evaluative one - 大切です, 必要です, 難しいです, 便利です, いい, ありがたいです. 私にとって家族がいちばん大切です。
The restriction that matters: にとって cannot head a clause whose predicate describes an action or an attitude aimed at that person. ×先生にとって感謝しています is wrong - gratitude is directed at the teacher, so that is 先生に対して. Rule of thumb: にとって is followed by an adjective or a noun predicate; に対して is followed by a verb of doing something to someone. Adnominal: にとっての (私にとっての故郷, watashi ni totte no furusato, what is home for me).
Step 6 - 〜として: in the capacity of. として (to shite) assigns a role, status or category to someone already holding it: 留学生として日本に来ました。 With は it becomes “for my part / as far as X goes” - 私としては賛成です (Watashi to shite wa sansei desu) - and with も, “also in the capacity of”: 彼は歌手としても有名です。 Adnominal: としての (教師としての経験, kyōshi to shite no keiken, experience as a teacher).
Step 7 - The supporting set. Four more built on the same skeleton, worth recognising now and producing later:
- 〜に基づいて (ni motozuite, adnominal に基づく) - on the basis of: 調査結果に基づいて.
- 〜に沿って (ni sotte, adnominal に沿った) - along, in line with: 方針に沿って (hōshin ni sotte, in line with the policy), 川に沿って.
- 〜をめぐって (o megutte, adnominal をめぐる) - surrounding, over (a dispute): 土地をめぐって争っています (tochi o megutte arasotte imasu).
- 〜における (ni okeru, adverbial 〜において) and 〜にわたる (ni wataru, adverbial 〜にわたって) - the stiffest written variants of で and “spanning”: 日本における教育, 三年にわたる工事.
Step 8 - Register. All of these belong to written and formal spoken Japanese - essays, news, reports, presentations. In casual talk they thin out: について -> 〜のこと (日本のことを話しました), によって (means/cause) -> で, にとって -> a plain topic は (私は日本語が難しいです), に対して (target) -> plain に. Using 〜における with a friend sounds like reading aloud from a form.
Forms & patterns
The five core items - attachment, meaning, adnominal:
| Compound | Romaji | Meaning | Adnominal (before a noun) | Example before a noun |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Noun + について | ni tsuite | about, concerning | についての | 日本についての本 |
| Noun + に関して | ni kanshite | concerning (stiffer) | に関する | 環境に関する法律 |
| Noun + に対して | ni taishite | directed toward, against | に対する | 学生に対する態度 |
| Noun + によって / により | ni yotte / ni yori | by, due to, depending on | による | 地震による被害 |
| Noun + にとって | ni totte | from the standpoint of | にとっての | 私にとっての故郷 |
| Noun + として | to shite | in the role of | としての | 教師としての経験 |
The four readings of によって - the main clause tells you which:
| Reading | What the main clause looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Agent (formal passive) | passive verb; the subject is a work, law or building | 法律は国会によって作られます |
| Means / method | an achievement verb: 解決する, 伝える | 話し合いによって解決しました |
| Cause | an event verb, often undesirable | 事故によって遅れました |
| Variation | 違う, 変わる, 異なる, いろいろだ | 人によって考え方が違います |
| 〜によっては | 〜もいます, 〜こともあります | 日によっては休むこともあります |
に対して vs にとって - minimal pairs on the same noun:
| Sentence | Reading |
|---|---|
| 学生に対して厳しいです。 Gakusei ni taishite kibishii desu. | strictness is aimed at the students |
| 学生にとって厳しいです。 Gakusei ni totte kibishii desu. | it is tough from the students’ point of view |
| 先生に対して感謝しています。 Sensei ni taishite kansha shite imasu. | ○ gratitude directed at the teacher |
| ×先生にとって感謝しています。 | wrong - にとって cannot head an action aimed at someone |
| 私にとってこの本は難しいです。 Watashi ni totte kono hon wa muzukashii desu. | ○ evaluation from my standpoint |
| ×私に対してこの本は難しいです。 | wrong - the book is not “aimed at” me |
The supporting set:
| Compound | Romaji | Meaning | Adnominal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜に基づいて | ni motozuite | on the basis of | に基づく |
| 〜に沿って | ni sotte | along, in line with | に沿った |
| 〜をめぐって | o megutte | surrounding (a dispute) | をめぐる |
| 〜において | ni oite | in, at (formal で) | における |
| 〜にわたって | ni watatte | spanning, over | にわたる |

Common mistakes
- 私に対して日本語は難しいです。 (Watashi ni taishite Nihongo wa muzukashii desu.) -> 私にとって日本語は難しいです。 (Watashi ni totte Nihongo wa muzukashii desu.) - an evaluation is made from a standpoint (にとって); に対して needs something aimed at a target.
- 日本について本はとてもおもしろかったです。 (Nihon ni tsuite hon wa totemo omoshirokatta desu.) -> 日本についての本はとてもおもしろかったです。 (Nihon ni tsuite no hon wa totemo omoshirokatta desu.) - the て-form cannot modify a noun, and here there is no verb for it to attach to either. Insert の, or rebuild with に関する. (Before a verb について stands alone: 日本について話しました。)
- 環境に関しる問題が増えています。 (Kankyō ni kanshiru mondai ga fuete imasu.) -> 環境に関する問題が増えています。 (Kankyō ni kansuru mondai ga fuete imasu.) - 関する conjugates like する, so the noun-modifying form is its plain form に関する, never ×関る or ×関しる. (環境に関して in front of a verb is fine - it is only the slot before a noun that needs 関する.)
- 人によっては考え方が違います。 (Hito ni yotte wa kangaekata ga chigaimasu.) -> 人によって考え方が違います。 (Hito ni yotte kangaekata ga chigaimasu.) - は turns it into “in some cases”, which then wants 〜もいます; a blanket statement of variation takes bare によって.
- 日本語の教師としての働いています。 (Nihongo no kyōshi to shite no hataraite imasu.) -> 日本語の教師として働いています。 (Nihongo no kyōshi to shite hataraite imasu.) - として modifies a verb directly; の appears only when として modifies a following noun (教師としての経験).
Tips
- Test each one by what follows it, not by the English. にとって is followed by an adjective or a noun predicate; に対して by a verb of doing something to someone; について by a verb of saying or thinking; によって by a passive, an achievement, a cause or a word of variation. The English “for”, “to”, “by” and “about” cut the pie in completely different places.
- The adnominals are irregular enough to memorise as a list: についての / に関する / に対する / による / にとっての / としての. Three take の, and three are verb-shaped - simply the plain form of the verb inside (関する, 対する, よる).
- によって is not a general “by”. For the doer of an everyday passive use plain に (犬に噛まれました); for a tool or means use で (電車で行きます). によって earns its place when the writing is formal, the agent is institutional, or the sentence is about variation.
- These are the gateway to formal Japanese. The same noun + て-form skeleton produces the B2 set 〜に際して, 〜にあたって, 〜を通じて in lesson 64. Getting the bare-noun attachment and the adnominal habit right now pays off there.
