Text cohesion, connectors & genre (academic/journalistic)
C1 לכידות הטקסט והשיח 68 / 69
In short
Up to now you have joined clauses inside a sentence — with ו־ (ve-), אבל (aval), כי (ki), כדי (kedei). This lesson zooms out one level: how to bind whole sentences and paragraphs into a cohesive text, in the two written genres where that matters most — academic prose and journalism. The tools are discourse connectors (מילות קישור, milot kishur) that open a sentence and tell the reader how it relates to the one before it: adds to it, contrasts with it, follows from it, or restates it.
Almost every connector here has an everyday twin you already know: literary אולם (ulam) for spoken אבל (aval), literary לפיכך (lefichach) for spoken אז (az). The everyday member is standard Modern Hebrew and never “wrong” — but in an essay or a news report it reads as too casual, so high-register writing reaches for the literary member. This is the Register & diglossia split applied to text glue. Alongside the connectors you also need text-deixis (pointing back and forth inside the text — כאמור, לעיל, להלן) and journalistic attribution (לדברי, נמסר כי) to source claims you are only reporting.
The rule
-
Connectors bind sentences; conjunctions bind clauses. The coordinators of Coordination & conjunctions and the subordinators of Causal, purpose & result clauses live inside one sentence. A discourse connector instead opens a new sentence (after a period or semicolon) and points back to the previous one. Typical punctuation: …previous sentence. יתר על כן, new sentence. — a period or semicolon before it, a comma after it.
-
Additive — “moreover / furthermore”: the literary set is יתר על כן (yeter al ken), זאת ועוד (zot ve’od), נוסף על כך (nosaf al kach), כמו כן (kmo ken) and the adverbial אף (af, “even/also”). They pile a second point onto the first. Their colloquial twin is a bare ו־ or the plain בנוסף (benosaf) / חוץ מזה (chutz mi-ze, “besides that”).
-
Adversative — “however / yet”: the high-register contrast openers are אולם (ulam), אך (ach) and עם זאת (im zot, “nevertheless”), with the very literary ברם (bram). All stand in for spoken אבל (aval). Note אך and אולם open a sentence cleanly the way English “however” does; אבל doing that job reads as conversational. (For contrast inside a sentence — לעומת, למרות — see Concessive & contrast clauses.)
-
Consecutive / result — “therefore / consequently”: לפיכך (lefichach), משום כך (mishum kach), על כן (al ken) and כתוצאה מכך (ketotza’a mikach, “as a result”). These mark the sentence as a conclusion drawn from the previous one. The neutral written לכן (lachen) sits just below them; the spoken twins are אז (az, “so”) and בגלל זה (biglal ze, “because of that”), both out of place in formal prose.
-
Reformulation — “that is / namely”: כלומר (klomar) and דהיינו (dehaynu) both mean i.e. — they restate the same idea in clearer or narrower words. Do not confuse them with למשל (le-mashal, “e.g.”), which introduces an example, not a restatement.
-
The paired hands — “on one hand … on the other”: מחד גיסא (mechad gisa) … מאידך גיסא (me’idach gisa) frame two sides of a tension, often shortened to מחד (mechad) … מאידך (me’idach). This pair is obligatory as a pair: once you open with מחד you owe the reader a מאידך. Stranding one hand is a classic error.
-
Sequencers — “firstly … finally”: to enumerate steps or arguments, open successive sentences with ראשית (reshit, “first”), שנית (shenit, “second”), שלישית (shlishit, “third”) and close with לבסוף (levasof, “finally”) or לסיכום (le-sikum, “in conclusion”).
-
Text-deixis — pointing inside the document: academic Hebrew points backward and forward through the text itself. כאמור (ka’amur, “as stated/mentioned”) recalls a prior point; לעיל (le’eil, “above/earlier”) points back, להלן (lehalan, “below/hereafter”) points forward; הנ”ל (ha-nal, “the aforementioned”, = הנזכר לעיל) and האמור (ha-amur, “the said [thing]”) re-refer to something already named. Direction matters: לעיל is behind you, להלן is ahead.
-
Anaphoric cohesion — tracking reference: across paragraphs the reader must always know what “it” is. Carry reference with a pronoun (הוא/היא/הם), with a summarizing noun phrase (התופעה הזו, ha-tofa’a ha-zo, “this phenomenon”; הדבר, ha-davar, “the matter”), or with the pointers above. A well-tracked text lets the subject drop or pronominalize without ambiguity.
-
Journalistic attribution — sourcing a claim: news Hebrew is scrupulous about who says what. Attribute with לדברי X (ledivrei, “according to X’s words”), לטענת X (le-ta’anat, “according to X’s claim”), לפי X / על פי X (lefi / al pi, “according to X”), and report the content with נמסר כי (nimsar ki, “it was reported that”), נודע כי (noda ki, “it became known that”) or לפי הערכות (lefi ha’arachot, “according to estimates”). These frames signal you are relaying, not asserting.
-
Genre style is nominal and impersonal (reference only). Academic Hebrew leans on the action-noun (שם פעולה, shem pe’ula — Verbal noun / action noun) and on the agentless passives — נפעל (Binyan nif’al (present, past, future)) and פועל/הופעל (Passive binyanim: pu’al & huf’al): נמצא כי (nimtza ki, “it was found that”) and נבדקה ההשפעה (nivdeka ha-hashpa’a, “the effect was examined”) are nif’al, הוצגו הממצאים (hutzgu ha-mimtza’im, “the findings were presented”) is huf’al — rather than first-person “I found.” Those are their own lessons; here just know that the connectors above sit on top of that nominal, agentless style.
Forms & patterns

| additive | כמו כן (kmo ken) | גם (gam) | likewise / also |
| adversative | אולם (ulam) | אבל (aval) | however |
| adversative | אך (ach) | אבל (aval) | but / however |
| adversative | עם זאת (im zot) | בכל זאת (be-chol zot) | nevertheless |

Common mistakes
- מחד גיסא הביקוש עלה. הפרק הבא עוסק ב… -> מחד גיסא הביקוש עלה, מאידך גיסא ההיצע ירד (mechad gisa … me’idach gisa …) - never strand מחד; the pair is obligatory — every “on one hand” owes a “on the other hand.”
- הממצאים חלקיים, כלומר דרושים סקרים ונתונים נוספים (meaning to give an example) -> הממצאים חלקיים, למשל בתחום החינוך (le-mashal…) - כלומר = “i.e.” and restates the idea; to introduce an example use למשל = “e.g.” Don’t swap them.
- המחקר נכשל. וחזרנו עליו. ומצאנו טעות. וסיכמנו. -> המחקר נכשל; לפיכך חזרנו עליו, ובבדיקה נמצאה טעות; לבסוף סיכמנו - don’t open every sentence with ו־; in cohesive prose vary the connector (לפיכך, לבסוף) and let ו־ join within a sentence.
- (essay) הפרויקט התעכב ובגלל זה חרגנו מהתקציב -> הפרויקט התעכב; כתוצאה מכך חרגנו מהתקציב (ketotza’a mikach) - בגלל זה and אז are spoken; academic register uses כתוצאה מכך / לפיכך / משום כך to open a result sentence.
- (formal report) המחקר לא הושלם אבל הממצאים מעניינים -> המחקר לא הושלם, אולם הממצאים מעניינים (ulam) - אבל is the everyday adversative; opening a high-register sentence use אולם / אך / עם זאת. (אבל is not wrong — just a lower register.)
- כפי שנאמר להלן, הנתונים נאספו ב-2019 (pointing back with the forward word) -> כפי שנאמר לעיל, הנתונים נאספו ב-2019 (le’eil) - לעיל points back (above/earlier), להלן points forward (below/later); reversing the deixis misdirects the reader. Use כאמור / לעיל for what came before.
Tips
- Punctuate connectors consistently: a period or semicolon before the connector, a comma after it — …חלקיים; יתר על כן, …. That comma is what marks it as a sentence-opener, not a clause-joiner.
- Learn the “but” ladder by register: colloquial אבל → neutral/high אך, אולם, עם זאת → very literary ברם. Pick the rung that matches the genre.
- Learn the “therefore” ladder the same way: spoken אז / בגלל זה → written לכן → formal לפיכך, משום כך, על כן, כתוצאה מכך.
- Treat מחד … מאידך as one unit you type together, then fill the middle — the safest guard against a stranded hand. The full גיסא version is the most formal.
- Track reference deliberately: after naming something, carry it forward with a pronoun (הוא/היא/הם), a summarizing phrase (התופעה הזו, הדבר), or the pointers הנ”ל / האמור, so “it” is never ambiguous across a paragraph break.
- Attribute like a reporter: hang claims you are only relaying on לדברי X, לטענת X, לפי X, נמסר כי, לפי הערכות — this frames them as reported, not asserted.
- Genre style is nominal and agentless: prefer the action-noun and the impersonal passive (נמצא כי, נבחנה ההשפעה) over first-person verbs — the connectors above ride on top of that style.
- These are written-genre tools. Piling אולם, לפיכך and יתר על כן into a text message or a chat over-formalizes it; that colloquial/literary split is Register & diglossia.
