Construct state — definite, plural & complex chains

B1 הסמיכות המורחבת 52 / 69

In short

Lesson 23 introduced the סמיכות (smichut): two nouns set side by side to mean “X of Y”, with no של and no ה־ between them — בית ספר (beit sefer, “school”), from נסמך (nismach, the head) + סומך (somech). This lesson takes that pair and stretches it: to the plural, to phrases marked as definite (“the school”, not just “a school”), to three-noun chains, and to chains carrying an adjective.

The machinery is the same throughout, and it rests on one governing idea: a construct chain behaves as a single word. Only its last noun decides definiteness, any adjective waits until the whole chain is finished, and the nismach never wears its own article. Get those three habits right and even a long chain like מנהל בית הספר (menahel beit ha-sefer, “the school principal”) falls out automatically.

The rule

  • The nismach takes a construct form; ktiv male shows some changes and hides others. A feminine singular in ־ה writes ־ת: עוגה (uga) → עוגת (ugat). A masculine plural in ־ים writes ־י: בתים (batim) → בתי (batei), חדרים (chadarim) → חדרי (chadrei), ילדים (yeladim) → ילדי (yaldei). A feminine plural in ־ות does not change its spelling at all: מכוניות (mechoniyot) stays מכוניות. Many masculine singulars only shift a vowel — בית is read bayit alone but beit in construct, yet the spelling stays בית either way, so the change lives only in the transliteration.

  • Only the LAST noun of the chain carries definiteness. To say “the school” you attach ה־ to the somech alone: בית הספר (beit ha-sefer). The nismach never takes ה־, so הבית ספר is impossible. One article, at the far end, makes the entire chain definite. This is exactly the placement from lesson 23, now the anchor for everything longer.

  • Chains can run to three (or more) nouns; still just one ה־, on the very last. Stack a nismach onto an existing pair: מנהל (menahel) + בית הספר → מנהל בית הספר (menahel beit ha-sefer, “the school principal”). The inner noun בית stays bare; the ה־ sits on הספר, the last link. Read the chain right-to-left as a series of “of” relations: manager-of house-of the-book = the principal of the school.

  • An adjective follows the WHOLE chain — never inside it. The chain closes, then the adjective comes. It agrees with the head noun (the nismach) in gender and number, and it takes ה־ when the chain is definite: עוגת השוקולד הטעימה (ugat ha-shokolad ha-te’ima, “the tasty chocolate cake”). Here הטעימה is feminine because the head עוגה is feminine — it describes the cake, not the chocolate. Compare תחנת האוטובוס המרכזית (tachanat ha-otobus ha-merkazit, “the central bus station”).

  • Proper names and set compounds are definite on their own. ישראל is already a name, so מדינת ישראל (medinat Yisrael, “the State of Israel”) is definite with no separate ה־. The same holds for a chain ending in a possessive-suffixed noun.

  • Colloquial של vs literary smichut. Everyday Modern Hebrew prefers של (lesson 10) for free, one-off possession: התיק של המורה (ha-tik shel ha-mora, “the teacher’s bag”). The smichut equivalent תיק המורה (tik ha-mora) means the same thing but sounds tighter and more literary. Both are correct MIH — pick של in speech, smichut for fixed compounds and a written register. This is not re-teaching של or the possessive suffixes of lesson 41; it is knowing when smichut is the better choice.

Common mistakes

  • הבית ספר -> בית הספר (beit ha-sefer) - the article never sits on the nismach; only the last noun of the chain carries ה־.
  • מנהל הבית הספר -> מנהל בית הספר (menahel beit ha-sefer) - in a three-noun chain the middle noun בית stays bare; the single ה־ goes on the final הספר.
  • בתים ספר -> בתי ספר (batei sefer) - a plural nismach takes the construct form בתי, not the free plural בתים.
  • עוגת טעימה השוקולד -> עוגת השוקולד הטעימה (ugat ha-shokolad ha-te’ima) - the adjective cannot sit inside the chain; it follows the whole chain and agrees with the head noun.
  • עוגת שוקולד הטעימה -> עוגת השוקולד הטעימה (ugat ha-shokolad ha-te’ima) - to make the chain definite you add ה־ to the last noun and to the adjective; marking the adjective alone is not enough.
  • מדינה של ישראל -> מדינת ישראל (medinat Yisrael) - a set name is smichut, not a של phrase, and the feminine מדינה shifts to מדינת.

Tips

  • Build the chain first, then act: line up the nouns, drop exactly one ה־ on the last one to make the whole thing definite, and only then think about an adjective.
  • Memorize the plural construct endings as a reflex — masc ־ים → ־י (batei, chadrei, yaldei, talmidei), fem ־ות unchanged (mechoniyot). The feminine singular ־ה → ־ת you already know from lesson 23.
  • The adjective always agrees with the head noun (the nismach), not the noun standing next to it. In עוגת השוקולד הטעימה the feminine ending on הטעימה tells you the cake is tasty, not the chocolate.
  • Let article ambiguity work for you: swapping הטעימה (fem) for הטעים (masc) would flip the meaning to “the tasty chocolate”, because the adjective would then agree with שוקולד.
  • Proper names (ישראל, ירושלים) and possessive-suffixed nouns are already definite, so a chain ending in one is definite with no extra ה־.
  • In speech, reach for של for one-off possession (התיק של המורה); save smichut for fixed compounds and a more literary, written tone (תיק המורה). Both are correct.
  • The one-letter prefixes still fuse onto the front: ב + בית הספר → בבית הספר (be-veit ha-sefer, “at the school”), just as in lesson 2.
