Reported speech

B1 El estilo indirecto 44 / 49

In short

Reported (indirect) speech relays what someone said with a verb like decir que… instead of quotation marks. When the reporting verb is in the past, the tenses inside usually shift back one step (presente -> imperfecto, and so on).

The rule

Direct speech quotes the exact words: Dice: "Estoy cansado." Reported speech folds them into a que-clause: Dice que está cansado. Three things can change: the reporting verb + que, the tenses, and the pronouns / time / place words.

Step 1 - Choose the reporting verb. Statements use decir que, comentar que, explicar que, responder que. Questions use preguntar. The linker is que for statements, and si or a question word for questions.

Step 2 - Backshift the tenses (only if the reporting verb is past). Report with a present verb (dice que) and the inner tense does not change. Report with a past verb (dijo que, me comentó que) and each tense shifts back:

Direct (original)Reported after a past verb
presente (está)imperfecto (estaba)
pretérito perfecto (ha llegado)pluscuamperfecto (había llegado)
indefinido (llegó)pluscuamperfecto (había llegado)
futuro (vendrá)condicional (vendría)
imperativo (ven)que + imperfecto de subjuntivo (que viniera)
presente de subjuntivo (en cuanto pueda)imperfecto de subjuntivo (en cuanto pudiera)

The imperfect, conditional, and pluperfect don’t shift any further — they are already “back”.

Step 3 - Adjust pronouns, possessives, and deixis. First person becomes third, and words anchored to the speaker’s here-and-now move to the there-and-then:

DirectReported
hoyaquel día / ese día
ahoraentonces
aquíallí
mañanaal día siguiente
ayerel día anterior
este / estaaquel / aquella
mi, tusu

Reported questions. Use preguntar. A yes/no question becomes preguntar si…; a question with a question word keeps the word and its accent — preguntar qué / dónde / cuándo…. The ¿ ? marks disappear and the tense backshifts, but the word order does not change: after a question word a subject still follows the verb, exactly as in the direct question.

  • "¿Dónde vives?" -> Me preguntó dónde vivía.
  • "¿Vienes?" -> Me preguntó si venía.
  • "¿Cuándo firma el director?" -> Me preguntó cuándo firmaba el director. (not cuándo el director firmaba)

No backshift when it’s still true. If you report in the present, or the statement is a general / still-valid fact, keep the original tense: Dice que está cansado. Me dijo que la Tierra es redonda.

Forms & patterns

Statement backshift in action (reporting verb = dijo):

Direct speechReported speech
”Trabajo aquí.”Dijo que trabajaba allí.
”He terminado.”Dijo que había terminado.
”Llegué ayer.”Dijo que había llegado el día anterior.
”Te llamaré.”Dijo que me llamaría.
”Ven aquí.”Me dijo que fuera allí.

Examples

Ana dice que está ocupada.Ana says she is busy. (present -> no shift)
Ana dijo que estaba ocupada.Ana said she was busy.
Me comentó que había perdido las llaves. He told me he had lost his keys.
Prometió que vendría a la fiesta. He promised he would come to the party.
El profesor nos dijo que estudiáramos más.The teacher told us to study more.
Me preguntó si tenía tiempo. He asked me whether I had time.
Me preguntó dónde vivía.He asked me where I lived.
Dijo que llegaría al día siguiente. He said he would arrive the next day.

Common mistakes

  • Me dijo que está cansado (for a past, no-longer-current state) -> Me dijo que estaba cansado - after a past reporting verb, the present shifts to the imperfect.
  • Me preguntó dónde vives tú -> Me preguntó dónde vivía - a reported question drops the ¿? and backshifts the tense, but after a question word it keeps the verb before its subject.
  • Me preguntó si me gustaba este sitio (reporting elsewhere) -> Me preguntó si me gustaba aquel sitio - reported speech shifts the demonstrative too: este -> aquel once you are no longer there.
  • Dijo que llegó ayer -> Dijo que había llegado el día anterior - a completed past shifts to the pluperfect, and ayer becomes el día anterior.
  • Me dijo que viene mañana -> Me dijo que vendría al día siguiente - future -> conditional, and mañana -> al día siguiente.
  • Me dijo que ven -> Me dijo que fuera - a reported command becomes que + imperfect subjunctive.

Tips

  • Two triggers must both be present to backshift: the reporting verb is past AND the information is no longer current. If either fails, keep the tense.
  • Memory chain for the shift: present->imperfect, perfect/preterite->pluperfect, future->conditional, present subjunctive or command->imperfect subjunctive.
  • Reported questions lose the ¿?, not their word order: after dónde / cuándo / qué the subject still follows the verb (cuándo firmaba el director).
  • Don’t forget the small words: hoy / aquí / este drift to aquel día / allí / aquel.
  • Quick check: could you re-quote it with quotation marks and an “I / you / now / here”? Then shift those to “he / she / then / there”.
