Present continuous

A1 Estar + gerundio 19 / 49

In short

estar + the gerund (-ando / -iendo) describes an action in progress right now: Estoy comiendo (I’m eating). Unlike English, Spanish does not use it for future plans.

The rule

Step 1 — Form the gerund (the -ing form):

  • -ar verbs -> -ando: hablar -> hablando;
  • -er / -ir verbs -> -iendo: comer -> comiendo, vivir -> viviendo.

Step 2 — Conjugate estar (estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están) and add the gerund. The gerund itself never changes: Estoy hablando, Estamos hablando.

Irregular gerunds:

  • when the stem ends in a vowel, -iendo -> -yendo: leer -> leyendo, oír -> oyendo, traer -> trayendo, ir -> yendo;
  • -ir stem-changing verbs shift the stem: dormir -> durmiendo (o->u), pedir -> pidiendo (e->i), sentir -> sintiendo (e->i).

Use it for what’s happening now — this very moment, or a temporary stretch around it: Este mes estoy estudiando por las tardes. For a scheduled future, Spanish uses the present or ir a + infinitive, never the continuous: “I’m flying tomorrow” = Vuelo mañana / Voy a volar mañana, not Estoy volando mañana.

Pronoun position. Reflexive and object pronouns go either before estar or attached to the gerund (with an accent): Lo estoy haciendo = Estoy haciéndolo.

Common mistakes

  • Estoy volando mañana -> Vuelo mañana / Voy a volar mañana - Spanish never uses the continuous for future plans; use the present or ir a.
  • Estoy hablendo -> Estoy hablando - -ar verbs take -ando; only -er / -ir take -iendo.
  • Estoy leiendo -> Estoy leyendo - when the stem ends in a vowel, -iendo becomes -yendo.
  • Estoy dormiendo -> Estoy durmiendo - -ir stem verbs change o->u / e->i in the gerund.
  • Estoy haciendo lo -> Estoy haciéndolo / Lo estoy haciendo - attach the pronoun (with an accent) or put it before estar; don’t leave it loose.
  • Estoy trabajando aquí todos los días -> Trabajo aquí todos los días - for a permanent habit use the plain present, not the continuous.

Tips

  • Build it in two steps: conjugate estar, then add the frozen gerund (-ando / -iendo). Only estar changes for the subject.
  • Reserve estar + gerundio for what is temporary — this moment or a passing stretch (Últimamente no estoy durmiendo bien). For a permanent routine use the simple present; for plans use ir a + infinitive.
  • When the stem ends in a vowel (leer, oír, traer, ir), -iendo becomes -yendo to avoid three vowels in a row.
  • ir and venir rarely take estar: for movement towards a place say Voy al trabajo, ¿Venís ya?, not Estoy yendo al trabajo — yendo turns up mostly after ya (Ya estamos yendo).
  • The -ir stem-changers keep their vowel shift in the gerund: dormir -> durmiendo, pedir -> pidiendo, sentir -> sintiendo.
  • You can swap estar for seguir / continuar (“keep doing”): Sigo estudiando — but that’s a later periphrasis.
