Learned participles and verb forms

C1 Λόγιες μετοχές και λόγιοι ρηματικοί τύποι 64 / 66

In short

Newspapers, contracts, court reports and company announcements are full of participles that demotic Greek no longer builds: ο ενδιαφερόμενος, τα λεγόμενα, οι συλληφθέντες, ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος. The same texts write υπέγραψε rather than the “expected” υπόγραψε, and εστάλη rather than στάλθηκε. None of this is a separate grammar you must master actively - it is a fixed inventory inherited from καθαρεύουσα that has settled into the formal register.

Treat this lesson as receptive. Your job is to decode the ending, find the ordinary verb hiding inside, and paraphrase it with a relative clause: ο συλληφθείς = αυτός που συνελήφθη. Producing these forms yourself is where learners go wrong - a wrongly declined λόγιος participle in an email is far more conspicuous than a plain demotic sentence.

The rule

Three participial systems survive in the written register. Each one is built on an ancient stem, each declines, and each has an everyday paraphrase.

  1. Present passive in -όμενος / -ούμενος (α’ conjugation -όμενος, β’ conjugation -ούμενος): ο ενδιαφερόμενος, οι εργαζόμενοι, τα λεγόμενα, το ζητούμενο, ο κατηγορούμενος. It declines exactly like an adjective in -ος, -η, -ο, and it is by far the most productive of the three - dozens of these have simply become ordinary nouns and adjectives. Meaning: an action under way, either “being X-ed” from a transitive verb (το εξεταζόμενο θέμα, ο κατηγορούμενος) or, from a deponent or intransitive verb, plainly agentive - “the one who X-es”: ο εργαζόμενος is not “the worked one” but “the one who works”, ο ενδιαφερόμενος “the one who is interested”.

  2. Aorist passive in -είς, -είσα, -έν: ο συλληφθείς, η τραυματισθείσα, το ληφθέν μέτρο. Masculine and neuter run on a -ντ- stem (του συλληφθέντος, οι συλληφθέντες), the feminine on -εισ- (της συλληφθείσας). Meaning: a completed action, “the one who was X-ed”. This is police-report and legal Greek; outside those genres it barely appears.

  3. Active in -ων, -ουσα, -ον: ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος, οι συμμετέχοντες, ο παρών / η παρούσα / το παρόν, τα ισχύοντα. Masculine and neuter again use the -ντ- stem (του παρόντος, των συμμετεχόντων), the feminine -ουσ- (η παρούσα, των παρουσών). Meaning: “the one who is X-ing”. ΛΚΝ labels this whole class λόγιο: ενδιαφέρων, συμμετέχων, μέλλων, παρών and απών all carry (λόγ.). What sheds the label is the neuter turned noun - το ενδιαφέρον “interest” and το μέλλον “the future” are entered plain, with no register mark. ενδιαφέρων, ενδιαφέρουσα, ενδιαφέρον “interesting” is in constant everyday use even so.

-όμενος is not -μένος. Lesson 50’s participle in -μένος names the state that results from a finished action (γραμμένος “written”, κουρασμένος “tired”); it is fully demotic and you should use it freely. The learned -όμενος names the process itself, or its agent. Hence the standard pair: η αναπτυσσόμενη χώρα is a country that is developing, η ανεπτυγμένη χώρα one that already is developed. (ΛΚΝ gives αναπτύσσω two participles, αναπτυγμένος and ανεπτυγμένος; the second, with the internal augment, is the one the formal register uses in this collocation.)

The internal augment. Verbs built on a learned prefix (υπο-, περι-, εν-, εισ-, δια-, ανα-, κατα-, απο-, επι-, μετα-, συν-, προ-) put the aorist augment inside the word, right after the prefix, where it takes the stress: υπογράφω → υπέγραψε, περιγράφω → περιέγραψε, εγκρίνω → ενέκρινε, εισάγω → εισήγαγε, συλλαμβάνω → συνέλαβε, αναφέρω → ανέφερε. The augment shows up only where the stress needs it, so it disappears in the 1st and 2nd person plural: υπέγραψα but υπογράψαμε. Genuinely demotic prefixes (ξε-, ξανα-) never do this: ξέγραψε, ξανάγραψε.

Learned mediopassives. A small closed set of verbs in -ίσταμαι and -κειμαι keeps ancient morphology and is used almost only in the 3rd person: πρόκειται (να / για), υπόκειται σε, επίκειται, υφίσταται, συνίσταται. Alongside them sit the regular contract mediopassive αποτελείται από and the athematic τίθεται, διατίθεται, which keep the ancient endings of τίθεμαι. ΛΚΝ spells that paradigm out in full - τίθεμαι, τίθεσαι, τίθεται, τιθέμεθα, τίθεστε, τίθενται - so only τιθέμεθα carries an ending with no modern counterpart at all, τίθεμαι and τίθενται differ from the everyday -ομαι, -ονται by one vowel, and the 2nd plural τίθεστε has been rebuilt on the modern ending. It also records a spoken-register regularisation, (προφ.) θέτομαι, διαθέτομαι, καταθέτομαι.

News-bulletin aorists. Instead of the demotic -θηκε passive, official language uses the ancient -η / -θη aorist, with the augment in front of a simple verb (εστάλη, ελήφθη, ετέθη) and inside a prefixed one (υπεγράφη, συνελήφθη, ενεκρίθη, κατετέθη); plural -ησαν: εστάλησαν, συνελήφθησαν. Read them, do not say them - except συνελήφθη, which is now the normal word even on television.

Forms & patterns

1. Present passive: ο εργαζόμενος (α’ conjugation -όμενος)

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter

The genitive is where these wobble, but not along the line you would expect. ΛΚΝ files εργαζόμενος, κατηγορούμενος, προηγούμενος and επόμενος in class Ε5 - the όμορφος type, whose accent does not move - so του εργαζόμενου, τους εργαζόμενους are dictionary forms, not sloppy speech. The shift one syllable to the right goes with the substantivised use, and there ΛΚΝ writes it itself (των εργαζομένων, του κατηγορουμένου, τους υφισταμένους) and files the noun in a mobile-stress class: ο υφιστάμενος Ο20α, το ζητούμενο Ο40, and separate feminine nouns η κατηγορουμένη, η προηγουμένη, η επομένη. So both του εργαζομένου and του εργαζόμενου are correct, and in the substantivised plural των εργαζομένων is what you will meet everywhere. Verbs whose mediopassive is in -ούμαι give -ούμενος (ζητώ → το ζητούμενο, χρησιμοποιώ → ο χρησιμοποιούμενος, κατηγορώ → ο κατηγορούμενος), and those with a mediopassive in -ώμαι give -ώμενος (ερωτώ → ο ερωτώμενος “the respondent”); both decline identically.

2. Aorist passive: ο συλληφθείς

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nom. sg.ο συλληφθείςη συλληφθείσατο συλληφθέν
Gen. sg.του συλληφθέντοςτης συλληφθείσας / -είσηςτου συλληφθέντος
Acc. sg.τον συλληφθέντατη συλληφθείσατο συλληφθέν

Acc. pl.τους συλληφθέντεςτις συλληφθείσεςτα συλληφθέντα
Voc. pl.συλληφθέντεςσυλληφθείσεςσυλληφθέντα

ΛΚΝ’s paradigm for this class (Ε12γ, model διασωθείς) does give a vocative, identical to the nominative - but it is a paper form: these are third-person, documentary words and nobody is ever addressed as συλληφθείς. Same pattern: ο τραυματισθείς, ο εκλεγείς, ο διορισθείς, το ληφθέν μέτρο, τα διαλυθέντα σωματεία.

3. Active: ο παρών, η παρούσα, το παρόν

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nom. sg.ο παρώνη παρούσατο παρόν
Gen. sg.του παρόντοςτης παρούσας / -ούσηςτου παρόντος
Acc. sg.τον παρόντατην παρούσατο παρόν

Gen. pl.των παρόντωντων παρουσώντων παρόντων
Acc. pl.τους παρόντεςτις παρούσεςτα παρόντα
Voc. pl.παρόντεςπαρούσεςπαρόντα

Longer members shift the accent in the genitive plural, exactly as nouns do: ο συμμετέχων → του συμμετέχοντος → των συμμετεχόντων; η συμμετέχουσα → των συμμετεχουσών; ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος → του διευθύνοντος συμβούλου → τους διευθύνοντες συμβούλους. The opposite of παρών is απών, απούσα, απόν, which declines the same way. ΛΚΝ keeps the two kinds apart by code: παρών and απών are Ε12α (model ανιών), already stressed on the last stem syllable, so nothing can move and the genitive plural stays των παρόντων; while συμμετέχων, διευθύνων, ισχύων and ενδιαφέρων are Ε12 (model τρέχων → των τρεχόντων), where the genitive plural does pull the accent right.

4. -όμενος against -μένος (lesson 50)

Process under way (-όμενος)Resulting state (-μένος)
η αναπτυσσόμενη χώρα (a developing country)η ανεπτυγμένη χώρα (a developed country)
το χρησιμοποιούμενο υλικό (the material in use)το χρησιμοποιημένο υλικό (used material)
το πωλούμενο διαμέρισμα (the flat on the market)το πουλημένο διαμέρισμα (the flat already sold)
τα γραφόμενά του (what he writes, his writings)το γραμμένο κείμενο (the written text)
ο εργαζόμενος, ο ενδιαφερόμενος, ο προηγούμενος- (agentive: no -μένος counterpart)

5. The internal augment in the aorist

εσείςυπογράψατεεγκρίνατεεισαγάγατε
αυτοί / αυτές / αυτάυπέγραψανενέκρινανεισήγαγαν

More of the same type: περιγράφω → περιέγραψε, διαγράφω → διέγραψε, αναφέρω → ανέφερε, μεταφέρω → μετέφερε, καταθέτω → κατέθεσε, υποβάλλω → υπέβαλε, απορρίπτω → απέρριψε, επιτρέπω → επέτρεψε, διακόπτω → διέκοψε, αποστέλλω → απέστειλε, συλλαμβάνω → συνέλαβε, προβλέπω → προέβλεψε. Note that εγκρίνω spells its prefix εγ- before κ but εν- before the augment: εν + έ + κρινε.

επίκειται συνάντησηa meeting is imminentπλησιάζει μια συνάντηση
το πρόβλημα υφίσταταιthe problem existsτο πρόβλημα υπάρχει
η επιτροπή αποτελείται απόthe committee consists ofη επιτροπή έχει

υπόκειται, επίκειται and συνίσταται are defective - ΛΚΝ marks all three “μόνο στον ενεστώτα”, present tense only, and in practice third person (plural υπόκεινται, επίκεινται). πρόκειται is defective the other way round: ΛΚΝ enters it as impersonal (απρόσ.), so it never has a plural, but it does have a past - the imperfect επρόκειτο (Επρόκειτο να μείνουμε τρεις μέρες στο νησί· Επρόκειτο για μια παρεξήγηση). υφίσταμαι is third-person only in the “exists” sense that concerns us here; in its other sense, “undergo, suffer”, ΛΚΝ conjugates it fully, with an aorist on a different stem: υπέστη, θα υποστείς, έχει υποστεί. αποτελούμαι, by contrast, is a perfectly regular β’ conjugation mediopassive (ΛΚΝ Ρ10.10):

PersonSingularPlural
1stαποτελούμαιαποτελούμαστε
2ndαποτελείσαιαποτελείστε
3rdαποτελείταιαποτελούνται

In real texts only the 3rd persons occur, because the subject is always a thing.

Common mistakes

  • Ο υπουργός υπόγραψε τη σύμβαση. -> Ο υπουργός υπέγραψε τη σύμβαση. - learned prefixed verbs take the augment inside, straight after the prefix, and it carries the stress; the same goes for περιέγραψε, ανέφερε, κατέθεσε. (ΛΚΝ does record υπόγραψα and υπόβαλα, but tags them (προφ.), spoken-only; κατάθεσα it lists beside κατέθεσα with no label at all, so that one is not an error.)
  • Υπέγραψαμε τη σύμβαση χθες. -> Υπογράψαμε τη σύμβαση χθες. - the internal augment appears only where the stress needs it, so it drops in the 1st and 2nd person plural.
  • Θα φύγουμε την επόμενη. -> Θα φύγουμε την επομένη. - when one of these participles is used as a noun, the accent moves one syllable right and stays there: η επομένη / η προηγουμένη “the next / the previous day”, ο υφιστάμενος → τους υφισταμένους, τα δικαιώματα των εργαζομένων, των ενδιαφερομένων. As a plain adjective it does not move (ΛΚΝ class Ε5): η επόμενη μέρα - and του εργαζόμενου is as correct as του εργαζομένου.
  • Η υπουργός ήταν παρών στη συνεδρίαση. -> Η υπουργός ήταν παρούσα στη συνεδρίαση. - the -ων participles are not indeclinable words: they have a full feminine in -ουσα (παρούσα, απούσα, ενδιαφέρουσα) and a neuter in -ον.
  • τους συλληφθέντους δράστες -> τους συλληφθέντες δράστες - -είς participles decline on a -ντ- stem like παρών, not like adjectives in -ος.
  • Είναι ανεπτυγμένη χώρα, γι’ αυτό χρειάζεται βοήθεια. -> Είναι αναπτυσσόμενη χώρα, γι’ αυτό χρειάζεται βοήθεια. - -όμενος is the process under way, -μένος (lesson 50) the state that results.
  • Το γράμμα εστάλη από τη μαμά μου. -> Το γράμμα το έστειλε η μαμά μου. - these aorists belong to bulletins and official documents; in conversation they sound like a parody of bureaucratic Greek.
  • Πρόκειται για να συζητήσουμε το θέμα. -> Πρόκειται να συζητήσουμε το θέμα. - πρόκειται να takes a verb, πρόκειται για takes a noun.

Tips

  • Set your goal at recognition, not production. The safe reflex when you need to say one of these is a relative clause with που: αυτός που συνελήφθη, όσοι ήταν παρόντες, αυτά που ισχύουν, αυτά που λέει.
  • Decode by ending. -όμενος / -ούμενος means the action is under way; -είς / -θείς means it is over and the subject underwent it; -ων / -ουσα / -ον means the subject is doing it.
  • The -ντ- test: if a word’s genitive ends in -ντος or its plural in -ντες, the nominative is -ων or -είς - never a form in -ος. So ο παρών, του παρόντος, οι παρόντες - never a nominative *ο παρόντος.
  • To read an internal augment, delete the augment vowel and rebuild the prefix: υπέγραψε → υπο + γράφω, ενέκρινε → εγ + κρίνω, συνέλαβε → συλ + λαμβάνω. In εισήγαγε → εισ + άγω the augment has merged with the verb’s α- into η-.
  • Neuter plurals of these participles are simply nouns and worth learning as vocabulary: τα λεγόμενα, τα ισχύοντα, τα υπάρχοντα, τα εισερχόμενα, τα εξερχόμενα, τα τεκταινόμενα, τα προλεγόμενα. They are not all one register: ΛΚΝ marks τα τεκταινόμενα (λόγ.) but τα υπάρχοντα (προφ.), spoken.
  • A handful have fully joined the everyday language - ΛΚΝ enters them with no register label at all, and you should use them without hesitation: ο προηγούμενος, ο επόμενος, οι εργαζόμενοι, ο κατηγορούμενος, το ζητούμενο, το ενδιαφέρον, το μέλλον. ενδιαφέρων / ενδιαφέρουσα / ενδιαφέρον and παρών / απών are common too, but ΛΚΝ still tags them (λόγ.): the -ων adjectives never quite shed the label, even where the noun beside them has.
  • Remember the second accent when a weak pronoun follows an antepenult-stressed participle: τα λεγόμενά του, το ζητούμενό μας, τα γραφόμενά της.
