Irregular and defective nouns
B2 Ανώμαλα και ελλειπτικά ουσιαστικά 57 / 66
In short
Most Greek nouns pick one gender, one stem and one set of endings and stay there. A small, very frequent group refuses. Four things can go wrong at once, and this lesson takes them one at a time:
- Heteroclite neuters change stem between the singular and the plural: το φως but τα φώτα.
- Meaning-splitting plurals: one singular, two plurals, two different meanings - οι λόγοι “the reasons” against τα λόγια “the words”.
- Common-gender nouns (κοινού γένους) have one form for a man and a woman; only the article, the adjective and the pronoun tell you which - ο γιατρός / η γιατρός.
- Defective nouns are missing cells: some exist only in the plural (τα Χριστούγεννα), some only in the singular (mass nouns such as το ρύζι), and some simply have no usable genitive plural.
Indeclinable loans such as το τρένο’s foreign cousins (το ταξί, το μετρό) belong to lesson 30; they are not “irregular”, they are just frozen.
The rule
1. Heteroclite neuters. The nominative and accusative singular are short; every other cell is built on a longer stem that you can only see in the genitive singular. Learn το φως - του φωτός, and the plural τα φώτα follows automatically. The pattern comes from ancient neuters that came down into everyday speech (κρέας, γάλα, φως) and from a few genuinely learned nouns (γεγονός, καθεστώς), plus one everyday demotic type, το βράδυ - του βραδιού - τα βράδια, where the -ι- of the ending swallows the syllable.
2. Meaning-splitting plurals. A few masculine nouns in -ος have kept two plurals: a regular masculine one and an older neuter one. The two are not stylistic variants - they mean different things, and choosing the wrong one changes the sentence. The neuter plural is normally the concrete, everyday, emotional sense (τα λόγια, τα χρόνια, τα πλούτη); the masculine plural is the abstract or technical sense (οι λόγοι, οι χρόνοι, οι δεσμοί). τα δεσμά “chains, fetters” pairs with ο δεσμός in the same way, but it is a learned word listed in its own right, not an everyday plural.
3. Common-gender nouns. Names of professions and offices ending in -ος, -ής and -ας historically had no feminine form. Modern Greek solves this by keeping the noun exactly as it is and switching everything around it: η υπουργός, η νέα υπουργός, η υπουργός η ίδια. The noun itself normally takes no feminine ending in careful language; feminines in -ίνα exist (η γιατρίνα, η υπουργίνα, η προεδρίνα, η δικηγορίνα) and belong to familiar, spoken usage rather than being dismissive. η βουλευτίνα is the exception: it carries no such label any more and is used as an ordinary word.
4. Defectives. Nouns pluralia tantum denote a period, a feast or a collection and take plural agreement even when English uses a singular: Τα Χριστούγεννα πλησιάζουν. Mass nouns work the other way: they have no natural plural, so they are counted with a measure noun followed by the bare noun in the accusative - ένα κιλό ρύζι, τρία ποτήρια νερό. When such a noun does get a plural, the plural means “portions” or “kinds”: δύο νερά (two bottles of water), τα κρέατα (kinds of meat). Finally, several of these nouns have a genitive plural that native speakers avoid; a preposition is the usual escape route.
Forms & patterns
Group 1 - heteroclite neuters
| κρέας | γάλα | φως | γεγονός | βράδυ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative sg. (ονομαστική) | το κρέας | το γάλα | το φως | το γεγονός | το βράδυ |
| Genitive sg. (γενική) | του κρέατος | του γάλατος (also του γάλακτος) | του φωτός | του γεγονότος | του βραδιού |
| Accusative sg. (αιτιατική) | το κρέας | το γάλα | το φως | το γεγονός | το βράδυ |
| Vocative sg. (κλητική) | κρέας | γάλα | φως | γεγονός | βράδυ |
| Nominative pl. | τα κρέατα | τα γάλατα | τα φώτα | τα γεγονότα | τα βράδια |
| Genitive pl. | των κρεάτων | των γαλάτων (rare) | των φώτων | των γεγονότων | των βραδιών |
| Accusative pl. | τα κρέατα | τα γάλατα | τα φώτα | τα γεγονότα | τα βράδια |
| Vocative pl. | κρέατα | γάλατα | φώτα | γεγονότα | βράδια |
Watch the stress: κρέας keeps its accent in the singular (του κρέατος) but moves it in the genitive plural (των κρεάτων), because in this ancient class the genitive plural in -ων is stressed on the second syllable from the end. φως is accented on the ending in the singular (του φωτός) and on the stem in the plural (τα φώτα, των φώτων).
Group 2 - one singular, two plurals
| Case | Singular | Plural: οι λόγοι “reasons, speeches” | Plural: τα λόγια “words, what was said” |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | ο λόγος | οι λόγοι | τα λόγια |
| Genitive | του λόγου | των λόγων | - (των λόγων serves both) |
| Accusative | τον λόγο | τους λόγους | τα λόγια |
| Vocative | λόγε | λόγοι | λόγια |
| Singular | Masculine plural | Neuter plural | The split |
|---|---|---|---|
| ο πλούτος, του πλούτου | (not used) | τα πλούτη, των πλούτων (avoided) | ο πλούτος = wealth as a concept; τα πλούτη = riches, possessions |
| ο χρόνος, του χρόνου | οι χρόνοι, των χρόνων | τα χρόνια, των χρόνων (age: χρονών) | οι χρόνοι = tenses, musical and athletic times, and named historical eras (στους νεότερους χρόνους); τα χρόνια = years, and periods lived through (τα χρόνια της κρίσης) |
| ο δεσμός, του δεσμού | οι δεσμοί, των δεσμών | τα δεσμά, των δεσμών | οι δεσμοί = ties, bonds, a relationship; τα δεσμά (learned) = chains, fetters |
Group 3 - common-gender nouns
| Case | Masculine sg. | Feminine sg. | Masculine pl. | Feminine pl. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | ο γιατρός | η γιατρός | οι γιατροί | οι γιατροί |
| Genitive | του γιατρού | της γιατρού | των γιατρών | των γιατρών |
| Accusative | τον γιατρό | τη γιατρό | τους γιατρούς | τις γιατρούς |
| Vocative | γιατρέ | γιατρέ | γιατροί | γιατροί |
| Noun | Masculine | Feminine | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| βουλευτής | ο βουλευτής, του βουλευτή | η βουλευτής (genitive avoided) | also η βουλευτίνα, no longer marked as colloquial |
| υπουργός | ο υπουργός, του υπουργού | η υπουργός, της υπουργού | accusative: τον υπουργό / την υπουργό |
| πρόεδρος | ο πρόεδρος, του προέδρου | η πρόεδρος, της προέδρου | the accent shifts in the genitive |
| δικηγόρος | ο δικηγόρος, του δικηγόρου | η δικηγόρος, της δικηγόρου | same for ο/η μηχανικός |
| μάρτυρας | ο μάρτυρας, του μάρτυρα | η μάρτυρας (genitive avoided) | witness in court; the feminine genitive, when a court document needs one, borrows the learned της μάρτυρος (from ο μάρτυς, του μάρτυρος) |
| ηθοποιός | ο ηθοποιός, του ηθοποιού | η ηθοποιός, της ηθοποιού | also ο/η δημοσιογράφος |
Group 4 - defectives
Plural only (no singular exists):
| Case | Χριστούγεννα | γενέθλια | μεσάνυχτα | ψιλά |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | τα Χριστούγεννα | τα γενέθλια | τα μεσάνυχτα | τα ψιλά |
| Genitive | των Χριστουγέννων | των γενεθλίων | των μεσάνυχτων (avoided) | των ψιλών |
| Accusative | τα Χριστούγεννα | τα γενέθλια | τα μεσάνυχτα | τα ψιλά |
| Vocative | (not used) | (not used) | (not used) | (not used) |
The same behaviour: τα εγκαίνια (opening ceremony), τα γηρατειά (old age), τα Θεοφάνια, τα κάλαντα (Christmas carols).
Singular only (mass nouns), counted with a measure:
| Mass noun | Measure | Counted phrase | Plural, if any |
|---|---|---|---|
Note the shape of the counted phrase: the measure noun carries the number and the case, and the mass noun follows in the accusative, with no article and no genitive.

Common mistakes
- Τα Χριστούγεννα πλησιάζει -> Τα Χριστούγεννα πλησιάζουν - a plural-only noun takes a plural verb, however singular the English word looks.
- Χρόνια πολλοί! -> Χρόνια πολλά! - τα χρόνια is neuter plural, so the adjective must be neuter plural too.
- Έφυγε για δύο λόγια -> Έφυγε για δύο λόγους - οι λόγοι are reasons; τα λόγια are the words somebody said.
- Πέρασα ωραίους χρόνους στην Κρήτη -> Πέρασα ωραία χρόνια στην Κρήτη - οι χρόνοι are grammatical tenses and musical tempos, not years of your life.
- Η γιατρός είναι έτοιμος -> Η γιατρός είναι έτοιμη - once the article is η, every word that agrees with the noun goes feminine.
- Μίλησα με τον υπουργό και της είπα -> Μίλησα με την υπουργό και της είπα - a common-gender noun keeps its form, but the article must match the person, not the ending.
- η τιμή του κρέας -> η τιμή του κρέατος - heteroclite neuters build every case except the nominative and accusative singular on the longer stem.
- του γάλα -> του γάλατος (also του γάλακτος) - same rule; the stem γαλατ-/γαλακτ- only shows up outside the plain singular.
- τα φωτά -> τα φώτα - the plural of το φως pulls the accent back onto the stem.
- Πάρε δύο κιλά ρυζιού -> Πάρε δύο κιλά ρύζι - after a measure noun the mass noun stays in the accusative; Greek has no “of” genitive here.
- Δεν έχω ένα ψιλό -> Δεν έχω ψιλά - τα ψιλά exists only in the plural, like English “change”.
Tips
- Learn a heteroclite neuter as a pair: το φως - του φωτός. The genitive singular hands you the stem for the whole plural, so you never have to memorise τα φώτα separately.
- Treat the split plurals as two separate vocabulary items with two English glosses. οι λόγοι and τα λόγια share a dictionary entry but nothing else.
- With ο/η nouns, look around the noun. In «Η πρόεδρος που διορίστηκε είναι νέα», three words carry the gender and the noun carries none.
- If a genitive plural feels impossible (των μεσάνυχτων, των πλούτων), rewrite it with a preposition: «η ώρα μετά τα μεσάνυχτα», «ένας άνθρωπος με πλούτη».
- When a mass noun appears in the plural, expect portions or kinds, not real counting: δύο νερά in a taverna, τα κρέατα at a butcher’s.
- Remember the second accent when a weak pronoun follows a word stressed three syllables from the end: τα Χριστούγεννά μας, το αυτοκίνητό της. And keep «η γιατρός μου» (my doctor) apart from «η γιατρός μού είπε» (the doctor told me).
- Feminines such as η γιατρίνα, η υπουργίνα or η προεδρίνα are fine among friends but out of place in a formal text; the safe register is always η γιατρός, η υπουργός, η πρόεδρος. η βουλευτίνα is the exception - it is no longer marked as familiar and stands beside η βουλευτής.
