Prepositions with the genitive

B2 Präpositionen mit Genitiv 47 / 52

In short

A group of prepositions - während, wegen, trotz, (an)statt, innerhalb, außerhalb, aufgrund, mithilfe, diesseits, jenseits - takes the genitive: the noun after them goes into the genitive case (während des Tages). This is the mark of careful, written German. In casual speech many of these are now used with the dative (wegen dem Wetter), which is widespread but still counts as nonstandard.

The rule

These prepositions trigger the genitive case (lesson 34). That means:

  • masculine / neuter: article des + noun ending -s / -es -> während des Tages, trotz des Wetters
  • feminine: article der, no noun ending -> innerhalb der Stadt
  • plural: article der, no noun ending -> trotz der Probleme
  • any adjective in between takes -en -> wegen des schlechten Wetters

Most of them express time (während = during), cause (wegen = because of, aufgrund = due to), concession (trotz = despite), substitution ((an)statt = instead of), place (innerhalb / außerhalb = inside / outside, diesseits / jenseits = this side / the far side of) or means (mithilfe = with the help of).

Während des Films schlief er ein. (time) Wegen eines Fehlers verloren wir das Spiel. (cause) Trotz des Regens spielten sie weiter. (concession) Statt des Autos nahm sie das Fahrrad. (substitution)

Genitive or dative? In educated writing the genitive is the rule. In everyday talk you will constantly hear the dative (wegen dem Stau, trotz dem Lärm, während dem Essen). Understand it, but write the genitive. With wegen, the dative is so common it is half-accepted in speech; with trotz and während the dative still sounds clearly colloquial.

Forms & patterns

The genitive forms after the preposition:

GenderNominativeAfter the preposition (genitive)
masculineder Tagwährend des Tages
neuterdas Wetterwegen des Wetters
femininedie Wocheinnerhalb der Woche
pluraldie Ferienwährend der Ferien
indefinite (fem.)eine Wocheinnerhalb einer Woche

The most useful genitive prepositions:

PrepositionMeaningExample
währendduringwährend des Konzerts
wegenbecause ofwegen des Lärms
trotzdespite / in spite oftrotz der Kälte
(an)stattinstead ofstatt des Kaffees
innerhalbinside / withininnerhalb eines Jahres
außerhalboutside (of)außerhalb der Stadt
aufgrunddue to / on the basis ofaufgrund der Daten
mithilfewith the help ofmithilfe eines Wörterbuchs
diesseits / jenseitsthis side / the far side ofjenseits der Grenze

When the genitive is not visible, switch to von + dative. A bare plural or an article-less noun has no genitive marker, so German uses von + Dativ:

innerhalb von zwei Wochen (not innerhalb zwei Wochen) wegen von Schnee -> better: wegen Schnees / wegen des Schnees trotz Bedenken -> trotz der Bedenken / trotz vieler Bedenken

With pronouns, standard German prefers the fused forms - possessive stem + -etwegen - to wegen mir / wegen dir: meinetwegen, deinetwegen, seinetwegen, ihretwegen, unseretwegen, euretwegen (euer drops its second e).

Common mistakes

  • wegen dem Wetter -> wegen des Wetters - the dative is colloquial; in writing use the genitive des …-s.
  • trotz den Regen -> trotz des Regens - trotz takes the genitive, not the accusative.
  • während die Woche -> während der Woche - feminine genitive article is der, not die.
  • innerhalb eine Woche -> innerhalb einer Woche - the indefinite article also declines: feminine genitive einer.
  • wegen des Wetter -> wegen des Wetters - masculine/neuter nouns add -s/-es in the genitive.

Tips

  • Learn them as a fixed club: “während - wegen - trotz - (an)statt - innerhalb - außerhalb”. If the preposition is on the list, reach for des / der and add -s/-es to a masculine or neuter noun.
  • Quick test for the article: masculine/neuter -> des (+ noun -s), feminine/plural -> der (no ending) - the same split as in lesson 34.
  • Writing vs speaking: in essays, e-mails and exams keep the genitive; in relaxed conversation the dative (wegen dem Stau) passes, but never write it.
  • No visible genitive? Use von + Dativ: innerhalb von drei Tagen, außerhalb von Berlin. For pronouns prefer meinetwegen / deinetwegen over wegen mir.
